Silk Museum - Abbadia Lariana

Silk Museum - Abbadia Lariana

In Via Nazionale, in the center of the village of Abbadia Lariana we find the Monti Civic silk factory Museum. The museum was opened in May 1998 thanks to the efforts of the Commune and to the work of many volunteers who did not want to lose the memory of what once was the main industrial activity in the area.

The history of silk production began in 1818 when Pietro Monti opened at Abbadia a silk spinning factory; in 1869 next to a spinning factory a second edifice was built for the rearing and spinning of the cocoons. The farmers of the area were distributed the seeds of silkworms so as to breed them, then withdrawing and working the cocoons. The tissue production cycle was completed. In 1934 the activity of the silk mill was ceased, later took over the premises a factory for the manufacture of aluminum, in 1978 the two buildings were purchased by the town of Abbadia, since 1981 began the planning of what would become the Monti Civic silk factory Museum.

The visit to the museum is captivating and exciting, it is possible to observe the cycle of silk production with the help of exhibition routes, message boards, interactive and educational workshops. You can admire the original equipment of the time, along with a factory environments of the nineteenth century. The Abbadia Museum is integrated with two other museums of the silk in the area of Como, the Educational Silk Museum of Como and the Museum of Abegg in Garlate. The Museum of the Abbadia and that of Garlate are joined by a pleasant boat ride, a unique trip to find out the source and processing of this precious fabric.
