Lezzeno - Lake Como

Lezzeno on lake Como

Lezzeno stands on the western shore of the Como-side of lake Como, just a few kilometers from Bellagio. The town unwinds across more than 7 kilometers, and is made up of 17 villages, distributed along the coast and across the slopes of the Colmenacco, Forcoletta and San Primo mountains. Tomb ruins prove that Lezzeno has been inhabited since the Roman age.

During the 10 year war between Como and Milan (1118 - 1127) the town was destroyed by people of Como because it was allied with the people of Milan. There was an ancient fortress in the village of Morbia which was later transformed into Palazzo Silva. Tradition states that Lezzeno was a coven of witches who fell in love with Lenno’s handsome young men, placed a spell on them making them burn with love to the point of death.

At one time, the wine of Lezzeno was famous - known for its medicinal virtues. Once past the town of Villa, before arriving in Bellagio, you can admire the Sassi Grosgalli, steep cliffs on the lake; a visit - by boat - to the Grotta dei Bulberi or Grotta Azzurra is also suggestive, where you can admire extraordinary plays of light. The church of Saints Quiricus and Julietta, built in the 16th century merits a visit. Inside is a grand fresco by the painter from Valle d'Intelvi, G. Quaglio. The ancient Oratory of the Holy Mother of the Ceppi, with the marble statue of the Holy Mother and Child dates back to the 15th century. There are numerous walks that can be taken in Lezzeno and its villages. We recommend Via Crucis with its 14 chapels which lead to the church of the Holy Trinity.

Lezzeno is also famous for a gastronomic specialty: Missoltini, fresh water fish (shad) - sun dried and grilled. There are many artisan businesses, from the ship yards to car mechanics; it even has its own bank, founded in 1963: Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Lezzeno.
