Pognana Lario on lake Como

The municipality of Pognana Lario extends partly on the shores of lake Como and partly on the slopes that rise up to Mount Preaola, the town is composed of five hamlets: Canzaga, Rovasco, Quarzano, Riva and Pognana; several tomb discoveries indicate that Pognana was already inhabited in Roman times. The name derives from the Latin Apponius, the territory was a feud of the Visconti family and then was transferred to the Gallio family under the Spanish rule.

Each hamlet gives us settlements of great interest and atmospheres of the past, thanks to the work of experts bricklayers and stonemasons. Natives of the area, they generously dealt with the construction of roads and the maintenance of churches and places of worship, the craftsmen were known and appreciated abroad. Pognana Lario was once famous for its Moltrasio stone mines. This building stone, used by the Masters of Comacini, is characterized by gray-blue streaks. Numerous images of devotion can be found in the streets of Pognana, making a trip to these places enjoyable and interesting. The church, built in the twelfth century, can be reached by panoramic tracks, on the inside you will see the frescoes of the Byzantine tradition depicting St. Cristofero and the Madonna with the Child.
