Lake Como's navigational history 1960 - 2000

Navigational history from 1960 to 2000

The Spluga ferryboat began its service on Lake Como on February 25, 1961. On August 4, 1964 the first hydrofoil arrived from Venice, on the 15th it began service on the Como - Bellagio - Menaggio line, and was launched with the name the Freccia del Lario. It was followed 5 years later by the second hydrofoil, the Freccia delle Azalee.

In 1970 the completely restored motor ship Alessandro Volta was placed back into service, as the steamship Patria, after careful studies and refined work took to the waters again.

Between 1974 and 1976 two additional hydrofoils arrived: the Freccia delle Betulle and the Freccia delle Gardenie, but it took till 1980 to see the huge 200-seat hydrofoil the Freccia Delle Valle on the lake. During the 1980s the fleet on lake Como was completely renewed thanks to the tireless work of engineer Pietro Santini.

On March 10, 1990 the catamaran Stendhal was launched, and taking part in that was City Council Member Roberto Biscardini, and the Navigations director Pietro Santini as well as Italian transportation historian, Professor Francesco Ogliari.

Today the fleet on Lake Como is made up of one historical steamship, the Concordia; 10 motor ships, among which is the Milano, the Promessi Sposi series, the Fiori series and the Volta; 5 Uccelli series speedboats.

There are 6 ferries the Plinio, the Lario, the Adda and the Stelvio series; 3 RHS150 series hydrofoils and the Freccia dei Gerani hydrofoil. The fleet was concluded with 3 new Città di Como series catamarans.
