The Churches of Sorico

Sanctuary of San Miro in Sorico

Sorico’s Sacred Legacy: A Journey Through Time and Art

San Miro Sanctuary (St. Miro).

Perched atop the Hill of San Michele (St. Michael) and overlooking the town of Sorico, the Sanctuary of San Miro (St. Miro) is a peaceful retreat accessible only by foot. A scenic trail through the woods leads visitors to this ancient church, which dates back to the 12th century. Originally dedicated to San Michele, it was rededicated to St. Miro in the 15th century. The structure features three naves and a towering Romanesque bell tower rising behind the sacristy. Inside, you’ll find exquisite frescoes by Sigismondo De Magistris and a striking altarpiece by Il Fiamminghino. Beneath the main altar lie the relics of St. Miro of Canzo, a Franciscan hermit who died in Sorico in 1381. He remains deeply revered by the local community, who traditionally pray to him for rain during times of drought.

Santo Stefano Church (St. Stephen).

The parish Church of Santo Stefano (St. Stephen) is located in the heart of Sorico, just steps from the historic Strada Regina. Built in the Romanesque style during the 15th century—thanks to a generous donation from the Duke of Milan, Filippo Maria Visconti—the church underwent a Baroque transformation in 1703. However, it still preserves its imposing original bell tower and portal. Interestingly, the columns of the entrance still bear the signatures and inscriptions carved by soldiers passing through the area over the centuries. This single-nave church houses three chapels on each side and features a beautiful Renaissance triptych of the Lombard school.

San Fedele Oratory (St. Fidelis).

Known locally as the Tempietto di San Fedelino due to its intimate size, the Oratory of San Fedele (St. Fidelis) sits in a secluded setting on the west bank of the Mera River. Built in the 10th century on the site where St. Fidelis is said to have been martyred and buried, the chapel is a masterclass in Como Romanesque architecture. Constructed from local Moltrasio limestone with a simple square nave, the interior contains fragments of frescoes thought to date back to the 11th century, offering a rare glimpse into the region's ancient past.
