The Church of San Vincenzo: A Baroque Gem in the Old Town

Nestled in the historic heart of Cernobbio, just steps from the lakefront and facing the charming Tolomeo Gallio Square, stands the Church of San Vincenzo. While the church’s origins trace back to 1150, early historical accounts from the 16th century described it as a modest Romanesque structure. It was completely transformed between 1758 and 1775, and today it welcomes visitors with a striking red-and-white Baroque façade, added in 1861 through the generous contributions of the local Monsignor Gianorini.

Artistic Splendor and Sacred Symbols

The interior features a graceful single nave flanked by two exquisite marble altars. On the right, visitors can admire the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, while the left is dedicated to a beautiful wooden sculpture of Saint Martha. Above, the vaulted ceiling comes to life with vibrant frescoes by Lietti and Torildo Conconi, depicting a "Glory of Angels" and the Four Evangelists. The side walls further enrich the spiritual narrative with scenes from the lives of Saint Lawrence and Saint Vincent.

Masterpieces of Craftsmanship

Every corner of San Vincenzo tells a story of resilience and artistry. The gilded wooden main altar is a faithful recreation of the original 18th-century masterpiece lost to a fire in 1978. In the rear of the nave, historic statues of Saint Ambrose and Saint Abbondio—the patron saint of Como—date back to 1863. Perhaps the most significant treasure housed here is the 16th-century Processional Cross, a goldsmithing triumph created by Francesco Ser Gregorio.

A Living Heritage

Though it officially passed its role as the town's main parish church to the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer in 1935, San Vincenzo remains a beloved landmark. A major restoration in 2005 breathed new life into its iconic bell tower, façade, and frescoes, ensuring that this historic sanctuary continues to shine as a symbol of Cernobbio’s enduring cultural and religious legacy.
