Sasso Lentina (Lentina Rock): Lombardy’s Largest Glacial Giant

The Sasso di Lentina—also known as the Pietra Lentina (940 m / 3,083 ft) is a monumental glacial erratic of Val Masino granite. Transported and abandoned by retreating Quaternary glaciers, this massive boulder measures 30 meters (98 ft) long, 10 meters (33 ft) wide, and 9 meters (30 ft) high. With a volume of nearly 1,500 cubic meters (53,000 cubic feet), it is officially the largest erratic mass ever discovered in Lombardy.

Located along the road descending from Pian Rancio toward Bellagio, the site features a well-maintained rest area established by the Comunità Montana Triangolo Lariano. The space is equipped with detailed explanatory signage to help visitors understand the unique geological history of the surrounding landscape.

The Sasso Lentina is geological rarity

The upper surface of the Sasso Lentina is remarkably flat, marked by small depressions caused by centuries of meteoric erosion. However, colorful local legends offer a different explanation: ancient tradition claims these holes are the scorched imprints of fireballs hurled onto the rock by playful devils. Adding to its historical intrigue, the stone served for centuries as the official border between the communities of Civenna and Bellagio. Near the summit, among various ancient engravings, you can still find two angled lines dating back to 1763 that once marked this territorial divide.
