Church of San Giovanni (St. John): The Ancient Soul and Baroque Heart of Bellagio

The church of San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist) stands in the peaceful hamlet of San Giovanni, adjacent to the historic Villa Trotti. While it was expanded and restored in 1785 to its current form, this site holds a profound spiritual legacy as the first religious foundation on Bellagio soil. Historical records confirm its presence as early as the 10th century, mentioning Adamo, the Presbyter of San Giovanni, in 995, followed by Arioaldo in 1009.

The Architecture of San Giovanni church

Though no visible traces of the original medieval structure remain, it is believed the present oratory was built directly upon its ancient ruins. The Arcipretale church we see today was constructed in stages between 1584 and 1685, with its final character defined by 18th-century refinements. The result is a magnificent Baroque facade flanked by a stately bell tower, which houses five historic bells that still chime over the lake today.

Inside, the three-nave layout is a showcase of Baroque opulence, enriched with intricate stuccos, delicate gold plating, and masterful paintings. The main altar is a triumph of 18th-century craftsmanship, featuring finely engraved wood and statues by renowned Valtellinesi artists. In the right nave, visitors can admire the church’s most prized artistic treasure: a stunning altarpiece donated by the Frizzoni family. This 16th-century oil painting by Gaudenzio Ferrari depicts the Risen Christ surrounded by saints and donors, representing a pinnacle of Renaissance art in the Lake Como region.

The Annual Bellagio Festival in San Giovanni

Every year at the end of June, the square in front of the church comes alive for the traditional Bellagio Festival. This vibrant local festival attracts visitors from across the lake, offering three days of celebration filled with live music, community spirit, and the unmistakable flavors of traditional Lario cuisine. It is a rare opportunity to experience the true, living heart of Bellagio culture.
