Mount San Primo: The Highest Throne of the Triangolo Lariano

Mount San Primo (1,682 m / 5,518 ft) is located just a few kilometers from Bellagio. From its summit, an incomparable panorama unfolds, offering what is arguably the most spectacular 360-degree view of the Como Prealps due to its unique central position. For centuries, the people of Bellagio maintained a tradition of ascending Mount San Primo in a procession to launch fire, signaling the official start of summer.

The mountain’s history is steeped in legend. Prior to the 15th century, a church dedicated to San Primo and San Feliciano stood upon the summit. The fame of these two Christian martyrs is tied to an extraordinary miracle: sentenced to death and thrown into a pit of bears, the wild animals, instead of mauling them, famously laid down at their feet in a gesture of peace.

The Classic Summit Loop

This traditional itinerary begins at the ski lift parking area and follows trails n. 1 and n. 39. It is a highly rewarding panoramic loop, but requires extra caution on the descent between the summit and Alpe dei Picett due to the steep gradient. The Veleso to Mount San Primo Loop

The alternative route from Veleso is a more challenging trek that demands good physical fitness and solid navigation skills. Finding the trail from the summit toward Monti di Là can be tricky as it lacks clear signage at the peak. The path crosses Monti di Erno and La Forcoletta, but it is completely without water sources; it is therefore essential to carry an adequate supply of water to tackle the entire ridge safely.
