San Giorgio (St. George) Church: A Medieval Treasure on the Wayfarer’s Path

The ancient church of San Giorgio (St. George) stands dramatically atop a rocky cliff on the border between Mandello del Lario and Abbadia Lariana. From its quiet churchyard, visitors are treated to a magnificent panoramic view of Lake Como’s shimmering waters. This historic landmark sits directly along the Sentiero del Viandante, the legendary hiking trail that traces the eastern shores of the lake toward the Valtellina valley.

The Architecture of San Giorgio Church

While some historians believe the church dates back to the 9th century—citing a rare holy water font engraved with ancient Greek crosses—others date the primary construction to the 13th century. What is certain is that the building underwent a significant transformation in the late 1400s. For centuries, this simple yet sturdy stone structure served as the cemetery church for the small hamlet of Crebbio. Its architectural beauty lies in its authentic Romanesque features: a classic gabled facade, exposed wooden beams (many of which are original 15th-century timber), and a massive bell tower that stands as a silent sentinel beside the path.

The frescoes in San Giorgio Church

The true heart of San Giorgio is the extraordinary cycle of frescoes that blankets its interior walls, arch, and presbytery. This breathtaking masterpiece, painted between 1475 and 1485, depicts the Last Judgment and the Second Coming of Christ. Created by Piedmontese masters inspired by the renowned Lombard school of Vincenzo Foppa, the vibrant colors and dramatic scenes offer a unique window into medieval spirituality. On the right wall, fragments of even earlier paintings can still be glimpsed, while the left side houses the mysterious 9th-century marble font.
