Tower of Maggiana (Torre di Maggiana) - Mandello Lario

The Tower of Maggiana in Mandello Lario

The Barbarossa Tower stands in the hamlet of Maggiana, in the municipal territory of Mandello del Lario. The tower was erected for defensive purposes in Medieval times, very likely in the 7th century. In 1828, during maintenance work, a marble memorial with an inscription attesting Fredrick Barbarossa’s stay there in 1158. Barbarossa was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1155, it is believed that his stay in Maggiana occurred during his descent toward Brescia and Milan.

Throughout the centuries, the Torre di Maggiana was modified many times, which today is in solid condition, probably one of Lake Como’s best preserved Medieval constructions. The building unwinds across a square floorplan, on five floors, all accessible, at the top we find a splendid terrace built in the 9th century, with a view of Mandello, Lecco’s lake and its surrounding mountains. The tower stands in a small, fortified courtyard, and measures circa 20 meters tall and 3.5 meters wide. The arched portal placed at the entrance of the building is of notable interest.

Today, the Tower of Maggiana is home of the Museum of Agricultural Arts, organized by Gruppo Amici di Maggiana. There are farming tools and rustic equipment placed on various floors. In June of each year, Maggiana hosts its traditional town festival: La Torre in Festa, with historic commemoration, Medieval costumes, and typical food. From May to September, the Torre di Maggiana is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00 to 12.00.
