Nestled at the base of Mount Legnone on the lush Olgiasca peninsula, the Piona Abbey (Abbazia di Piona) is a spiritual sanctuary just a stone's throw from the shores of Lake Como. The Abbey's spaces and buildings

The Piona Church, facing east, is a masterpiece of simple, Romanesque architecture. Spanning 27 meters (88 feet) in length, it is built as a single-nave structure. The interior reveals stunning frescoes, including those of the apsidal basin and the cross vault, which features evocative scenes of the Ascension of Christ.
The Cloister is the true heart of the abbey. Built between 1252 and 1257 by Prior Bonaccorso de Canova, its quadrangular design is a place of profound silence and meditation. The architecture is steeped in symbolism, reflecting the number four—representing the elements of the universe, the cardinal directions, and more.
The Chapter House (Sala Capitolare) remains the site where the monks gather to read and hold community meetings, including secret ballots to elect their Superior and the admission of novices. The interior features historic wooden benches and chairs originally from the sacristy of Saint Zeno in Verona.
