Villa Manzoni: The Historic Home and Literary Heart of Alessandro Manzoni

Villa Manzoni is a stunning Neoclassical estate, originally built before the 18th century and meticulously preserved through the ages. The residence centers around an elegant courtyard framed by sandstone columns, featuring historic outbuildings and a lush, expansive garden that was once part of a vast private park. Owned by the Manzoni family until 1818, the villa was later sold to the Scola family before being acquired by the City of Lecco in 1962. Today, it serves as a premier cultural hub, housing the Manzoni Museum, the Civic Art Gallery, and a specialized research library.

The Life and Works of Alessandro Manzoni

The Manzoni Museum spans ten immersive rooms, showcasing rare early editions, original manuscripts, and personal memorabilia that bring the life and works of Alessandro Manzoni to life. The ground floor remains a time capsule of 1818, featuring the original furnishings from the year the author bid farewell to his beloved home. Visitors can explore the Sale Manzoniane (Manzoni Rooms) and visit the tomb of Alessandro’s father, Pietro, located in the quiet courtyard. On the upper floor, the Civic Art Gallery, founded in 1938, displays an impressive collection of local masterpieces, including significant works by the renowned artist Ennio Morlotti.

The Art Gallery's permanent collection offers a journey through the region’s creative history from the 11th to the 20th century. With over 400 paintings and 2,000 rare prints and engravings, it stands as the most important artistic archive in the Lecco territory.
