Technical Traverses: From Rifugio Elisa to the Grignone Summits

La Gardata – 1,040 m (3,412 ft) to Rifugio Elisa – 1,515 m (4,970 ft)

This is an enjoyable traverse through an evocative alpine environment. Begin on the mule track that climbs behind the Gardata house, ascending a somewhat steep hill. As the track transitions into a meadow path, it may become less evident; here, turn right and climb diagonally across the grasslands. You will reach the ridge descending from the imposing face of Sasso Cavallo. From there, the trail crosses the Canalone di Val Cassina and merges with Trail #16, leading directly to Rifugio Elisa.

Rifugio Elisa – 1,515 m (4,970 ft) to Rifugio Bietti – 1,719 m (5,640 ft)

Departing from the left of Rifugio Elisa, this high-altitude traverse crosses meadows overhung by the Zucco dei Chignoli and the massive face of Sasso dei Carbonari. Following the Alta Via markers, the trail climbs steeply along the edge of the Canalone di Val Cassina. Technical Note: Reaching the bottom of the ravine requires navigating difficult rocky sections aided by fixed chains and metal ladders. After reaching the Bocchetta di Val Cassina (or di Sengg), the trail descends to the right along a ledge that can be friable (crumbly) in some sections before crossing the Vallone di Releccio to reach Rifugio Bietti.

Rifugio Elisa – 1,515 m (4,970 ft) to Rifugio Brioschi – 2,409 m (7,903 ft)

Route: Via dei Chignoli | Estimated Time: 2h 30m – 3h 00m
This is the most historic route to the Grignone summit from the Mandello slope, offering a formidable landscape of towering rock faces. From Rifugio Elisa, follow Trail #16 to Piè dei Chignoli. Turn left and ascend the grassy rib of the Chignoli. The route continues through meadows and rocky slopes until reaching Bocchetta della Bassa, where it meets Trails #7 and #33 for the final push to the Rifugio Brioschi summit station.
